If you live in Singapore, you’ve probably heard of Healthier SG, a subsidised health screening programme.
But when it comes time for your annual check-up, a common question arises: Should I use Healthier SG, or just book a basic screening at a private clinic like I always do?
To answer that, let’s break down exactly what kind of health screening tests you are going for and how much the same tests cost under Healthier SG compared to going the unsubsidized private route.
1. What Is Included In A Healthier SG Screening?
Unlike private clinics that often sell “one-size-fits-all” bundles, Healthier SG Screening uses an evidence-based approach. You are only screened for conditions when you hit the age where statistical risks increase.
Your eligibility for subsidized tests depends strictly on your age, sex, and when you last had a normal result.
Here is exactly what the national programme covers:
- Cardiovascular Risk (Men & Women Age 40 and above): Eligible men and women are screened for obesity, hypertension, high blood cholesterol, and diabetes. This includes a blood test (fasting or non-fasting), blood pressure measurement, and a check of your height, weight, and waist circumference.
- Diabetes. The Under-40 Exception: Generally, adults aged 18 to 39 are not eligible for routine subsidized diabetes checks. However, if you take the 2-minute online Diabetes Risk Assessment (DRA) on the HealthHub app and are flagged as “At Higher Risk” due to factors like weight or family history, you will receive an e-invitation that unlocks these subsidized blood tests early.
- Cervical Cancer (Women Age 25 and above): A Pap test every 3 years for women aged 25 to 29. At age 30 and above, this transitions to a more advanced HPV test every 5 years.
- Breast Cancer (Women Age 50 and above): A mammogram every 2 years. (Note: While your GP manages most tests, mammogram services are only available at participating polyclinics).
- Colorectal Cancer (Men & Women Age 50 and above): An annual FIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test) which is a simple stool test to check for occult blood.

2. Cost Of Healthier SG Screening: $0 to $5
If you are an eligible Singapore Citizen, Healthier SG Screening promises peace of mind for $5 or less at participating CHAS GP clinics. This incredibly low fixed fee includes all eligible tests done in the same visit, plus one follow-up consultation to discuss your results if required.
Here is the exact breakdown for Singapore Citizens:
- Enrolled in Healthier SG: $0 (Free if you go to your enrolled Healthier SG clinic. To enroll in Healthier SG, you must be a Singapore Citizen aged 40 and above.)
- Pioneer Generation (PG): $0
- Merdeka Generation (MG) / CHAS Blue / CHAS Orange: $2
- CHAS Green / All other eligible Citizens: $5

For Permanent Residents (PRs): You do not get the fixed $5 cap. You pay a subsidized rate for the screening tests, but the clinic’s prevailing doctor consultation fee will be charged accordingly.
Breast Cancer Screening
Breast cancer screening (mammograms) is the main exception to the $5 flat-fee rule under the national screening programme.
For Healthier SG Enrolled Citizens: $0. If you are a Singapore Citizen aged 50 and above and officially enrolled in Healthier SG, the test is still free. Your enrolled GP clinic will assess your eligibility and refer you to a designated screening center or polyclinic, where your mammogram will be fully subsidized ($0).
For Unenrolled Citizens: $25 to $50. If you are not enrolled in Healthier SG and are simply utilizing the standard national subsidies, the cost for a mammogram is significantly higher than the $5 cap applied to blood tests. The subsidized rates at polyclinics are:
- Pioneer Generation: $25
- Merdeka Generation: $37.50
- Singapore Citizens: $50
- Permanent Residents: $75
3. Cost Of Similar Health Screening At Private Clinics: $50 to $200+
If you walk into a private clinic without tapping into any government subsidies, you operate on a fee-for-service model. Because private clinics bundle tests differently, your bill scales up based on what you need.
- The Basics (Under Age 40): Even without complex lab work, a private consult just to check your blood pressure, weight, and discuss lifestyle changes will cost the standard consultation fee: typically $30 to $80+.
- The Chronic Panel (Age 40 and above): Adding standard private lab fees for cholesterol and diabetes blood panels brings a basic package to $50 to $110+.
- The Full Routine (Age 50 and above): If you add private lab fees for stool kits or specialized diagnostic imaging like mammograms, the price easily jumps from $150 to well over $300, not including follow-up consultation fees to go through the results.
- Breast Cancer Screening: If you do not use any government subsidies and book a basic 2D mammogram at a private imaging center or private hospital, the starting price typically ranges from $130 to $250. Adding a breast ultrasound (often recommended for women with dense breast tissue) can push the private bill over $300.
4. The Verdict
By going for a Healthier SG screening instead of one at a private clinic, a Singapore Citizen saves anywhere from $50 to over $360 depending on their age and gender. Leveraging these $0 subsidies protects your wallet from regular private laboratory fees and repeat consultation charges, translating into thousands of dollars saved over a lifetime of routine health tracking.
However, if you want advanced diagnostic profiling like full-body MRI scans or extensive tumor markers, private executive screening packages are still the way to go.
But if you are simply looking for routine cholesterol and blood sugar checks, paying private rates means spending more than necessary. By taking a few minutes to enroll in Healthier SG, you can get the exact same clinical data and professional medical advice for next to nothing.
